Photosynthesis

The plant's central metabolic process: light energy is converted, oxygen is produced from water, and sugars are synthesized from carbon dioxide.

Photosynthesis is the central metabolic process in plants and the foundation of all life on Earth.

In this process, sunlight is converted into a specific form of energy, and oxygen is produced from water. In a second step, the energy is used to build carbohydrates, such as sugar, from the carbon dioxide in the air. The sugar can then be used within the plant for growth or as a building block for other substances.

Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells. These small, round cell components contain the green pigment chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color. Chlorophyll captures light energy and converts it into the form of energy described above.
