Bacteria without cell walls that can survive only within their host plants. In sugar beets, they cause the disease SBR, which results in so-called "rubber beets."
Phytoplasmas are cell-wall-less bacteria that can survive only in their host plants. Common host plants include fruit trees, grapevines, strawberries, and sugar beets.
In sugar beets, they—spread by leafhoppers—cause SBR (Syndrome Basses Richesses, or low-sugar syndrome). This results in so-called “rubbery beets,” which have poor storage life and reduced yields.
