Ralstonia solanacearum is a bacterium that clogs the xylem—the vascular bundles—of the plant, causing wilting. Under favorable conditions—that is, warm and humid conditions—yield losses of 35 to 90 percent can occur.
The bacterium is a major problem for agriculture and infects potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, as well as roses. As with many bacterial diseases, there is no pesticide available. Only quarantine, the destruction of infected plants, and strict hygiene and disinfection measures can prevent its introduction and spread.
