Xanthomonas campestris is a plant-pathogenic bacterium that causes severe damage to a wide variety of crops worldwide. Like Agrobacterium, it can move using a flagellum and grows best under warm, humid conditions above 20 °C.
The infection enters through wounds or natural openings, after which the bacteria multiply in the vascular tissue (xylem) or in the intercellular spaces. As with all bacterial diseases, the most important measures for containment are strict hygiene and the removal of infected plant material.
